At the Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva earlier today (May 18), bidding was spectacular. The historic Oppenheimer Blue Diamond was up for sale the first time ever. The spectacular 14.62 carat blue diamond is known to be one of the finest Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ever to go up for auction. The diamond sold in 25 minutes – a record time for a record-setting amount for any jewel sold at auction — a whopping $57,541,779.

Heaviest bidding came between collectors in three continents, but the final buyer is a private collector whose location is not being identified. The experts estimated that the rectangular stone would fetch between $38 million and $45 million – so the sale surpassed all expectations.
